This device has a sensor on circa 1m long wire.
Temperature read comes from the sensor itself, no matter where the cable or the meter unit is located.
But this meter may be an overkill for your intended use (you don't expect your car engine be +1200C hot, do you). Perhaps the following device would suit your needs pretty enough and is a lot cheaper:
