Natural resin secreted by the Pistacia Lentiscus plant growing on the Greek island of Chios.
The mastic comes in the form of tear-shaped lumps of light yellow color, transparent and shiny.
It softens at 80°C and dissolves at 105 to 120°C.
It dissolves in aromatic hydrocarbons, turpentine oil and partially in alcohols.
Due to its high transparency and gloss, it is used as an ingredient of varnishes for oil paintings.
